How we help
We help forests thrive.
Planting
From April to October each year our teams of 6 to 30 men plant Pinus radiata seedlings throughout New Zealand. With 6 million seedlings planted – our teams are known for giving forests their best start possible. Remote work on steep terrain does not deter us. We sort accomodation. We also source seedlings and deliver them to planting sites.
Thinning
We are good at thinning. We train our thinning teams in house so they learn from the best. Our thinning crew bosses are experts at balancing quality, safety and volume ensuring blocks are thinned optimally and on time. Thinning is often a great investment; increasing harvest value while reducing harvest risk.
Pruning
Pruning’s hard work but needs to be done. Our pruning teams are carefully trained, supervised and equipped to ensure trees are pruned to spec as needed in a safe efficient manner. Whether 1st or 2nd lift pruning – our teams know to make the cuts that maximise log values come harvest time.
Native & Riparian Planting
Do you want to bring an ecological vision to life? This is one of the more rewarding parts of our work – we’d love to help. Our experienced planting crew leaders ensure valuable plants grow into a valuable eco-systems through careful planting practices. We can source and deliver plants at good rates as required if you need them.
Chemical Releasing/Pest Control
If weeds and pests are threatening your forest we can eliminate them. We use modern spray equipment with GPS technology to ensuring proper spray coverage and minimal environmental impact. Our crew leaders are fanatical about the safety of their crews. We ensure all chemicals are handled in a safe manner.
Silvicultural Records/Fire Plans
We can share our work records with you online as carbon registration evidence.
We can help you minimise your fire risk. We operate a central north island forest fire service and can give you the advice you need to minimise fire risk in your forest.
Fire Response
We assist with rural fires, specialising in extinguishing and mopping up forestry and backcountry fires. Working alongside FENZ, we’re often contracted to manage both large and small fires, adapting our response to the needs of each situation.
In December 2023, our team spent 3 days on Matakana Island managing a major forest fire. We also recently deployed 13 men to Te Kaha to cut ahead of a large scrub fire.
We’re ready for any fire response, big or small.
Silvipath
We grow careers, not just trees.
Silvipath, created by Patrick Aislabie, works within and alongside AOS to provide opportunities and development within the Forestry industry.
Work Experience Programme for secondary schools
Students take part in a 6-week Taster Course, where they will spend one day each week working alongside experienced crews, gaining hands-on Silviculture experience in a real work environment under the guidance of a qualified trainer/assessor.
Throughout the programme, students can earn Unit Standards relevant to their chosen field, as well as credits towards NCEA. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to explore potential career paths, develop practical skills, and connect with future employers. Many have gone on to work with Ace of Spades after completing the programme, proving these pathways lead to real career opportunities.
